KNIGHTS HELP THEIR OWN

On Friday March 28 heavy rain flooded the streets of Slidell and Lacombe; but with GOD’S grace the weather cleared on Saturday and the Sammy Speer Tribute Golf Tournament was held.  Both Sammy Speer, and his wife Carrie; were killed on I-55 near McComb last October.  Many in Slidell mourned the loss of Sammy and Carrie, the beloved high school teacher and guidance counselor.  Sammy and Carrie were both parishioners of St. John and Sammy was a charter member of the Knights.  Several Knights volunteered to support their fallen brother by working the Hospitality Tent at the benefit.  Most of Knights assisting at the tournament also worked the fish fry the pervious night.  Merlin Schwab, the Grand Knight said,   “Our organization is founded on the concept of giving back to the community”, especially helping a brother knight.  Our council had three teams that participated. One team smoked and prepared 50 pounds of pulled pork, another team played in the tournament and the third team served delicious sliders.  This is what makes the Knights special,  “team work”.  Funds from the Inaugural Sammy Speer Tribute Golf Tournament will fund the Carrie On Scholarship Fund, which will be given to an outstanding senior at Slidell High School.
